It is a tragedy, a humane one, unfortunately. We get excited about things we think are very important. We write or scream. Maybe we go on the streets and protest. Soon after a few days when the news gets old and the media stop to report about that, we start to forget. And those who are suffering, those who we felt so strongly about, are left alone with their fates.
One example is the fate of dozens of students of Tehran’s Amir Kabir University who were arrested last February for staging a peaceful protest meeting on the university campus. First, 70 were arrested. Then we heard 40 were “conditionally” released. What happened to the remaining 30? Some were released, some arrested again.
One of them is Ahmad Ghassaban, a student activist who is reportedly still held in Evin prison. You may add other names: Majid Tavakkoli, Abbas Hakimzadeh, Mehdi Mashayekhi, to name only a few from dozens.
Did you ever think what is happening to them every day, every week that they are off the news headlines?
